Welcome to New Year’s Day 2012, the beginning of the end, as some in the Mayan mindset will be glad to tell you. And Doesn’t it Feel Special! This is my official New Year’s greeting / blessing / well wishes for the rest of the year. May the new year be well for you. May it be much improved over the last. May it bring new friends and return old friends to you. May it smile upon you in fortune. May it keep troubles from you. May you find peace in it. So say we all.

In an attempt to prove just how much time I don’t have, I will be attempting the NaNoWriMo for 2011. Heaven help me. Actually, this will probably be a good idea. I’ve just started a new job (yea me!), and I need to work out the time management to get everything done in my usual day, so adding in regular writing on the schedule is a good idea, and NaNoWriMo is the best kick-start to that process. It starts Nov. 1, so I have a day to prepare (yikes.) Regular word-count updates will happen. The link to my specific NaNoWriMo page is on the top right of the site where the pretty NaNoWriMo graphic has been placed. Drop by!

Okay, I’ve skipped writing about my current situation. It’s embarrassing. I lost my “Day job” in June. Now, that’s not the embarrassing part. I’m not even going to go into why I think I lost the job. No point. The embarrassing part is that I’ve had all of this extra time, and I haven’t been writing. Now, I may not sell anything, and even if I did, I wouldn’t get paid for a while, but the point is that the less I write, the more the muscle (ie, the brain) atrophies and the skill that I might have built up during the time away from the keyboard, has been squandered and possibly lost. I have written a little. I’m 12K words into a new project which has been a lot of fun, but I think I’ve discovered the not-so-fun parts, because I haven’t written anything in two days. I guess it’s time to get back on the horse and make it fun again. Working title? Yeah, I have one. Mostly it’s a description of what the books about. Sort of. I’ll have more later when I’m more like 40K words in. Updates to follow.

I have jumped back into the word grinder though. I’ve got something in head and it’s starting to push into pixels on the screen. This is the one I’m going to push on and get out there. This is my official contract with myself to do it. And it’s totally not something I normally would write. The work’s current title? Murder on Windrows Past. Yeah, it’ll probably change.

That lovely story I wrote about the Troll has been rejected. It was my first story to a professional publication, so it came as no surprise when the manuscript came back with a pre-printed rejection slip. This pre-printed slip of no help to me, of course. I had hoped it would peak someone’s interest to the point that I’d get a more personalized rejection. This only proves that I need to work on my craft more. Apparently, I need to work on it a lot more. This means I’ve get back behind the keyboard and “gird up my loins” for the journey to the next level. The journey cannot be avoided, and a short-cut will not aide me in the journey, it only lets me reach a destination more quickly. If all I wanted was to be a published author, I’d just post the story here in this forum. Boom! Published. However, there is something to be said for a process which vets its submissions. Sure, they may not all be my favorite. How would that even be possible? No, they may not all be my favorite, but they’ve all been approved by the gatekeepers. At this point, it’s going [...]

Some may wonder why I don’t post more. The truth is, that I post a lot, just not here. Much of what I have to say is not for the professional image I want to project here. I want to be a writer. I want to be published, so talking about the latest episode of Doctor Who, the movie Kick Ass, or how awesome I think Jim Butcher is not going to help me with my actual writing, or posting news about my projects. I could be wrong. Someone should tell me if I’m wrong. Another thing that won’t help me with blogging about my projects is forgetting my password to this site. Yes, I keep forgetting the exact password to this site. Now, I must say that having a password in this day and age is a bothersome necessity. It wouldn’t be so bad if passwords weren’t so easy to steal or guess. We could go on using the old “secret” for a password, and no one would ever guess it. Yeah, right. So, we need these strong passwords. The stronger the better. They have to have capitalized letters, and non-capitalized letters. They need numbers and symbols. They can’t [...]

The new “new project” with the Troll I couldn’t get out of my head has been sent off. I sent it to Realms of Fantasy, because I think it’s the right place for the Troll’s first appearance. Wouldn’t hurt me either, since this is my first submission to a professional publication. The printed manuscript and cover letter was mailed last night. So, let’s give that five days travel time. Add three months for the usual response time from Realms (per their website), and another month just to be safe. In essence, if I haven’t heard back from them by October 7, I’ll ask them if they’ve rejected it yet. Patience is key. I may be anxious, but that’s mostly the jitters of having sent off something that I feel confident about. It’s good to feel confident, but it’s tough having to wait. I’ll get there. Now maybe I can get back to the “new project” that this new “new project” interrupted.

So, chapter two of new project is still stalled. Nothing on that. I’m not sure why it’s acting up. In the meantime, I wrote a short story around 6800 words. It’s draft is complete and now needs polishing. Something struck me that I needed to put a little more energy into practicing craft, so I took a classic fairy story and rewrote it. I made a troll the protagonist, so it’s a little different. It’s also got quite a lot of humor, which my wife tells me is one of my stronger styles. Funny part is, the Troll is stuck in my head, and I started another tale retelling with him as protagonist again. More news on these later. I will return to the Old New Project, just have to work out stuff. ~Ciao
